Turkey’s Nazi remarks continue to stir a diplomatic backlash from European capitals as the French president and German chancellor jointly condemned Ankara’s inflammatory rhetoric.
In a joint statement on Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande said it was unacceptable for Turkey to accuse Germany and other countries of Nazi practices for banning political rallies on behalf of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of a referendum.
Mr. Hollande talked Merkel on the phone and expressed support for the German stance against Turkey. Ankara has found itself in an ensuing diplomatic row with a number of European Union countries, inadvertently contributing to the formation of a rare unity among the EU against Turkey’s bellicose rhetoric.
After Turkey has plunged into a dispute with the Netherlands after the Dutch officials refused to allow the Turkish ministers hold rallies in Rotterdam, Berlin sided with Amsterdam when Mr. Erdogan unloaded Nazi charges.
