ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi Was Killed, Observatory Claims

ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed that it confirmed the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Russia said in June that the ISIS leader might have been killed in one of its airstrikes outside Raqqa, but Iraqi and Western officials dismissed the claim.

“(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor,” the director of the British-based war monitoring group Rami Abdulrahman told Reuters.

Mr. Abdulrahman said his sources didn’t indicate exactly when the ISIS leader was killed.

Pentagon said early on Tuesday that it couldn’t confirm the death of Baghdadi.
