U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced on Friday that all non-emergency personnel of the embassy in Havana was ordered to leave Cuba amid “attacks of an unknown nature.”
“Until the Government of Cuba can ensure the safety of our diplomats in Cuba, our Embassy will be reduced to emergency personnel in order to minimize the number of diplomats at risk of exposure to harm,” Mr. Tillerson said in a statement.
To date, 21 U.S. Embassy personnel have suffered a variety of injuries from the attacks that caused such physical symptoms as hearing loss, dizziness, headache, fatigue, cognitive issues, and difficulty sleeping.
“Investigators have been unable to determine who is responsible or what is causing these attacks,” Mr. Tillerson said.
The State Department has also issued a travel warning advising U.S. citizens against traveling to Cuba.
