At least 337 people were injured in clashes with police on Sunday when Spanish authorities moved to block polling stations and seized ballot papers to prevent an independence referendum in the northeastern autonomous region of Catalonia.

Former Catalan President Artur Mas called on Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to “resign immediately,” adding that he is in charge of a “violent state.”

The Spanish government has declared the vote unconstitutional and illegal. Authorities previously arrested 12 Catalan officials for facilitating the vote.
