Trump: Iran Has Not Lived Up to ‘Spirit’ of Nuclear Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump

U.S. President Donald J. Trump said on Thursday that Iran has not lived up to the spirit of the nuclear deal reached in July 2015.

“We must not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. The Iranian regime supports terrorism and exports violence, bloodshed and chaos across the Middle East. That is why we must put an end to Iran’s continued aggress and nuclear ambitions. They have not lived up to the spirit of the agreement,” Mr. Trump told reporters.

The U.S. president has time until October 15 to certify whether Tehran is in compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action that restraints Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis said remaining a party to the Iran nuclear deal was in the national security interest for the United States.
