Iraq’s Rusafa Investigation Court issued arrest warrants on Wednesday for members of the Kurdistan Region’s High Electoral and Referendum Commission who assisted with the independence referendum in September.
“The verdict was issued after the National Security Council filed a lawsuit arguing that the referendum was contrary to the decision of the high federal court,” Judge Abdulstar Bayraqdar, spokesperson for the high judicial council, said as quoted by Rudaw.
On September 25, 92 percent of Kurds voted in favor of secession from Iraq. However, Baghdad considered the referendum unconstitutional and refused to recognize the results.
