A leading Maltese journalist and blogger who made enemies by reporting on corrupt individuals, including politicians, has been murdered in a car bomb attack.
Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed just 20 minutes after she published her latest blog post on Monday. She also reportedly filed a police report over death threats 15 days before the attack.
Mrs. Galizia had been digging into corruption in Malta as part of the Panama Papers investigation and her blog attracted huge traffic, even more than some mainstream media outlets.
Mrs. Galizia’s killing put Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at a difficult position. Mr. Muscat described the incident as a “barbaric attack” and invited foreign security services to look into the bombing. FBI agents were on their way to investigate the attack.
