The parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan voted on Tuesday to delay planned elections after three of the autonomous region’s political parties agreed to extend the current legislative term.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and Kurdistan Islamic Union agreed on Monday to delay parliamentary elections, which were scheduled to be held on November 1.
On Monday, the head of the electoral commission, Hendrean Mohammed, said the parties had failed to present candidates, Reuters reported.
Preparations for the election were suspended ahead of the September 25 independence referendum.
Rudaw news agency reported that the extended session of parliament will address elections as well as the situation in Kirkuk. The PUK’s Begard Talabani is expected to serve as parliamentary secretary, replacing Fakhradin Qadir, the Kurdistan Islamic Group (Komal)’s official who resigned last month.
Parliament reconvened in September after a two-year suspension.
