Spain’s public prosecutor on Monday called for a number of charges against Catalan leaders, including sedition and misuse of public funds, stemming from the region’s declaration of independence.

Last week Jose Manuel Maza‘s office recommended charges against President Carles Puigdemont, Vice President Oriol Junqueras and other cabinet members.

On Friday, the Catalan parliament voted to secede from Spain. The same day, the Spanish senate agreed to invoke Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which authorizes Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy‘s government to take over administration of the semi-autonomous region.

On October 1, the Catalan region held an independence referendum over the objections of the central Spanish government. The government said 90 percent of 2.3 million votes cast were in favor of leaving Spain, but Mr. Puigdemont suspended the independence declaration only moments after declaring it on October 10.
