The government of Iraq announced on Wednesday that parliamentary elections will be held in mid-May.
The Cabinet announced that the vote will take place on May 15, and “parties with armed wings” will be excluded from running candidates.
The government agreed to the date in a meeting on Tuesday but it must still be approved by parliament. Parliament previously voted to hold local elections in April. Iraq last held national elections in 2014 and municipal elections in 2013.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has not said if he will seek a second term.
