An attack on a Sufi mosque in the North Sinai region of Egypt resulted in the death of at least 235 people, while 109 were injured, local media reported on Friday.
State-owned Ahram Online said at least two explosions took place prior to gunmen opening fire at worshipers outside al-Rawdah mosque, located in a village between Bir al-Abed and the city of al-Arish. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the country’s military and police would “avenge our martyrs” and respond “using brute force against those fragments of terrorists” to ensure security.
According to Reuters, the Egyptian military has already begun conducting air strikes in the area of the incident.
U.S. President Donald J. Trump called the attack “horrible” and “cowardly,” urging the international community to work to discredit extremism.
