The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution against U.S. President Donald Trump‘s recognition of the city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The General Assembly approved the motion in an emergency session over the objections of the United States and Israel.
Mr. Trump and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley had threatened to cut funding to any country that voted in favor of the non-binding resolution.
Speaking ahead of the vote on Thursday, Ms. Haley called the resolution disrespectful.
“When a nation is singled out for attack in this organization that nation is disrespected. What’s more, that nation is asked to pay for the privilege of being disrespected. In the case of the US we are asked to pay more than anyone else for that dubious privilege,” she told the General Assembly.
Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Daniel Danon called supporters of the resolution the “puppets” of “Palestinian masters.”
Israel “will never be driven from Jerusalem,” he said.
Mr. Trump announced on December 6 that the U.S. recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and would relocate its embassy there from Tel Aviv. Israel declared Jerusalem its capital in 1949, but the international community largely recognizes East Jerusalem and the Old City to be part of Palestine. Palestinians consider it to be their capital.
