Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on Tuesday that Moscow has begun aiding Africa’s Sahel region with fighting terrorism.
“Our country has begun to assist the law enforcement agencies of the Sahel countries, and we intend to continue such cooperation because building the capacities of national armed forces is important for enhancing the effectiveness of the G5 Sahel joint forces,” Mr. Nebenzya said at a UN Security Council’s meeting as quoted by TASS.
The Russian representative’s comment followed the announcement by the U.S. Department of State on Monday that Washington had pledged up to $60 million to support counterterrorism efforts of the Group of Five Sahel States (G5 Sahel) that includes Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mauritania.
